How Can We Increase Immunoglobulin Levels?

Breast milk is rich in immunoglobulins and this is a primary reason why it is so valuable to newborns.

While breast milk is a good source of immunoglobulins, Colostrum, the milk a cow first produces after giving birth, is an even greater source of immunoglobulins.

In fact, the Colostrum produced in the first 6-24 hours after birth, has the highest concentration of IgG and is therefore highly sought after in the supplement industry.

Given all this, it makes sense that Colostrum supplements, rich in IgG are in high demand.

The Colostrum Problem – Demand exceeds Supply

When we were looking to source an ingredient for our Perfect Gut & Immune Blend, it seemed that Colostrum was an obvious choice.

Of course, since we only believe in sourcing the highest quality ingredients, and refuse to compromise, we were looking for Colostrum that met our strict criteria —

When we started to ask the hard questions of Colostrum suppliers, we started to see the problem with the Colostrum industry…there was high demand for colostrum and very limited supply.

Yes, colostrum has become more popular in the last 5 years as a supplement and this has increased demand, but part of the demand also comes from the calves!

You must let the calves get the colostrum they need, therefore, any supplier who didn’t let the calves get the colostrum they need was immediately taken off our list.

With only 6-24 hours to get the colostrum with the highest IgG levels, but leaving time for the calves to milk first, just doesn’t leave much supply for the colostrum ingredient suppliers.

Colostrum is Amazing… Colostrum Supplements… Not So Much

Again, we want to be very clear here and make an important distinction.

The colostrum that exists in grass-fed cows is amazing! It is rich in immunoglobulins and an extremely important source of nutrients for newborn calves.

The problems we were finding was with the colostrum that was being offered by suppliers.

We wish we could say that since demand outpaces supply, ingredient suppliers stopped offering colostrum. Unfortunately, that’s not what we found.

As we asked more questions and demanded more lab testing, we found we could get colostrum, but with a large list of compromises that were total deal breakers.

While we love the nutrients contained in colostrum, when we looked at lab testing, we were not finding those same nutrients in colostrum products.

A Better Way to Get Immunoglobulins From the Cow?

It turns out that immunoglobulins are not just in the colostrum of cows, they are also present in the plasma and not just in a short window after giving birth.

Further research led us to understand that many abattoirs, who sacrifice cows for their meat, just let their plasma (blood) run down the drain.

We are big believers in honoring all we eat by using every part of the sacrificed animal, nose to tail, so it felt like finding a supplier who could provide us with lab tested serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI), that normally goes to waste, could be exactly what we were looking for.
